About Us

A Home for Left-Handed Players

Finding a guitar should be about the sound you love and the way you play, not settling for the one left-handed model in the corner. At Southpaw Guitars in Houston, Texas, left-handed musicians are at the heart of our story.

From your first instrument to the guitar you've spent years searching for, we're here to help you explore your options, ask questions, and find something that feels like yours.

Our Story Started in 1980

Jim Duncan and his friend Bill Townsend opened a music store in 1980 with $2,000, their own guitars as stock, and a willingness to learn. The business began as Traders Corner and later Gold 'n Guitar Exchange.

Replacing those first instruments brought a familiar challenge into focus: quality left-handed guitars could be hard to find. Jim knew that if he was struggling, other left-handed players were, too. Meeting that need became the foundation of Southpaw Guitars.

Guitar shows, relationships with fellow dealers, and advertising in music magazines helped Jim connect with more instruments and more lefty musicians. What began as a small shop grew into a destination for players looking for choices made with them in mind.

More Choices for Lefties

Our commitment goes beyond finding individual guitars. Over the years, Jim has worked with manufacturers and encouraged them to expand their left-handed offerings. That same purpose still guides Southpaw: helping left-handed players discover instruments they can get excited about.

Whether you lean toward electric guitars, acoustics, or basses, we believe the details matter. Body shape, neck feel, tone, and playing comfort all deserve consideration. We welcome questions and enjoy helping players compare the features that matter to their music.

People, Not Just Instruments

A guitar is a personal choice. Our team, including Jim Duncan and Omar Ibarra, brings a love of instruments and an understanding of left-handed players to the conversation. Tell us what you play, what you like, and what you're hoping to find.

Southpaw also offers guitar repairs and lessons, giving musicians ways to care for their instruments and keep developing their playing.
